The ‘Comptoir des Filaments’: a saffron-infused world

Lucie and Benoit invite us to share in their passion: the growing of saffron. Discover the story of these artisans: homegrown in the Charleroi Metropolitan Area.

In their home municipality of Beaumont, Lucie and Benoit, looking for a meaningful sideline activity, thought long and hard before finding what was right for them. They were searching for just one thing: going back to basics, working the land. Their perseverance paid off, and saffron growing became an obvious choice. How did this happen? Well, in a nutshell, Lucie and her husband are both perfectionists, and growing this spice requires meticulousness, care, patience, and creativity. Not many people know this, but saffron can be used to make many products: the couple has no end of ideas about distilling the saffron into “home-made” products.

When looking to develop a range of saffron-based products, Lucie quickly became interested in confectionery. She did an internship at Paul Klein, in Belfort, in July 2018. Thus, the Comptoir des Filaments offers a wide range of saffron-flavoured products (sweets, caramels, syrups, marshmallows, cuberdon prototypes…) that you can buy from several local retailers. Their product also enhances the dishes of home cooks or top chefs in the Metropolitan Area, who practice their art in renowned kitchens such as La Part des Anges in Ragnies or Les Lettres Gourmandes in Montignies-St-Christophe.

The icing on the cake: the Comptoir des Filaments was awarded the “certified craft business” label at the beginning of 2022. Well-deserved recognition after 4 years of adventure…
