In search of 100% ‘planet-friendly’ getaways

Staying the night in an eco-friendly hotel, gîte or room doesn’t have to come at the expense of comfort and well-being. Worlds away from the cliché of the camp bed in a tent, here we show you some eco-responsible places that place equal value on giving their guests a warm welcome and caring for the environment.

Extérieur de la cabane
This eco-friendly and sustainably-built lodge is an opportunity to enjoy the vast expanse of fields and meadows; a typical landscape of our regions (credit: Walestru).

Its owners welcome you to their little corner of paradise whilst respecting the nature that is all around them by taking a sustainable ecological approach. They offer light and mobile accommodation, locally-sourced breakfasts, wood-fired heating and trees and water features that immerse your room in a setting that is both intimate and which blends into the landscape.

A log cabin at Froidchapelle

Discover this ecological and sustainable hiking hut, Walestru, located just a stone’s throw from the Virelles ponds. The accommodation, in a separate building from the adjoining farm, is tastefully furnished and has everything you need, whilst respecting the environment (solar powered shower and dry toilets).

You can also have breakfast or a meal on site, prepared with products from the farm and around the region. As you find yourselves thrust into life on the farm, feel free to wander around and say hello to the cows and other animals that live there!

A dome at Philippeville

Enjoy an overnight stay in the heart of nature in a dome. This little piece of paradise, located near Mariembourg, offers a well-appointed 40 m2 dome on the edge of the woods with a kitchen, a bathroom… and even a Nordic bath. A wood fire keeps the dome nice and toasty on nights when temperatures dip.

In summer, you can plan a barbecue right next to the waterhole and spend the evening being serenaded by a frogs’ chorus.

Enjoy an evening by the fire in a comfortable and sustainable log cabin.

A Caravan in Gerpinnes

Step into this garden, leave the noise of cars behind, and discover the enigma that is Natafée’s Caravan. Natafée (real name: Natalie) has set up a caravan in a corner of her garden and decorated it in the simplest way possible, for a real back to nature experience. The outdoor shower runs on solar energy. You can also run yourself a Nordic bath.

Nathalie, with her inimitable hospitality, will show you round her patchwork garden, crisscrossed by a stream with a little pontoon and occupied by a few animals.

She also arranges cooking activities using wild plants.

A boat in Seneffe

How do you like the sound of a charming, tiny house floating on the water? This nautical accommodation is just calling for you to come aboard. Moored on a pontoon, in the Seneffe marina, this small boat, called the floating cottage even though it never sails, is the perfect way to enjoy the calm canal waters without having to sacrifice comfort.

Hosts Coline and Arnaud are committed to sustainable development. They have installed photovoltaic panels on the roof. They also choose to work with local suppliers wherever possible, for their breakfasts and the other services on offer (activities or catering).

Tuck into a local breakfast.

A vintage caravan in Charleroi

Geneviève acquired this old caravan over 30 years ago and employed her impeccable taste to refurbish it. Close to Charleroi, in Goutroux, the caravan is nestled into the heart of nature. It is located in a garden at the end of a quiet lane, just a few metres from the RAVeL.

The caravan is decorated with the artwork of its host, a sculptor and engraver, and its atmosphere will transport you back in time. A charming door leads to your shower and toilet facilities and it even comes complete with a jacuzzi.

Geneviève also works with plants and will be happy to show you around her workshop.

Ecological and sustainable accommodation is a real return to our roots.

Dans une cabane sur pilotis à Walcourt

Take the load off your feet in this ecological cabin in the des Étangs du Francbois! Decorated with care, this accommodation offers all the comforts of home (bathroom with walk-in shower, wifi…) while being entirely surrounded by nature. The wood-burning cooker and the charging station are part of their sustainable approach.

Take advantage of one of the two terraces on the water to observe nature from sunrise to sunset. Better still, the Swedish Jacuzzi keeps you toasty all year round. A sauna and a communal pool complete the facilities and will certainly get you into that holiday feeling.

This accommodation has the internationally recognised Green Key label. This label means that guests are committing themselves to limiting their carbon footprint. Saving water and energy, sorting waste, preventing biodiversity and eating sustainably… Respect for the environment is a core value.

In the Charleroi Metropolitan Area, these other unusual stays place great emphasis on caring for the environment, such as this one in a container in the middle of nature in Walcourt or this chalet in Couvin, among others… Go and discover them!
